Guwahati: The Enforcement Directorate summoned Assam Civil Service officer Paragmani Mahanta for questioning. He leads the state Geology and Mining Department. Investigators are digging into alleged financial irregularities totaling nearly Rs 100 crore. These claims span several senior roles Mahanta held across various state agencies.
The agency is scrutinizing his time at the Assam Mineral Development Corporation. Mahanta allegedly pocketed Rs 50,000 every month from the firm. Officials suspect a total loss of Rs 5.60 crore to the corporation. The investigation also covers shady recruitment transactions and missing funds intended for retired employees.
Evidence suggests illicit spending reached his own home. He allegedly used stolen cash to buy a laptop worth Rs 2 lakh for his child. Another claim involves a ghost employee. Someone diverted Rs 15,000 per month using the name of a cleaning worker. Sources said, "The ED is expected to question him about various financial transactions and alleged irregularities during his different official assignments."
The net is wide. Federal agents are also looking at Mahanta's past work at ARTFED and the Handloom and Textiles Department. No charges are set in stone yet. The investigation is still moving forward.
