Shillong: The Meghalaya government will build a central hub for tourist taxis in Umtyngar. This facility will include a parking lot, a food court, a cafe, and public toilets. Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar confirmed the project following a meeting with transport officials and stakeholders on Monday.
The meeting included tourist taxi associations, hoteliers, homestay owners, and tour guides. Officials from the Tourism Department, the Deputy Commissioner, and the East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police also attended. Dhar described the talks as “very fruitful and positive” and noted the state plans to replicate this model elsewhere.
The government will fund the construction on community land provided for free. The project aims to function as a major pick-up and drop-off point for travelers. A new joint coordination committee now links taxi operators and hospitality providers to boost the use of local cabs.
Dhar noted that tourism numbers dropped recently but are starting to climb. He urged the stakeholders to work together. Regarding the ongoing border taxi dispute, he stated that associations from Assam and Meghalaya must solve the issue themselves.
Authorities also plan to increase safety along the Sohra circuit. Plans include round-the-clock police patrols and mandatory CCTV surveillance for homestays to stop any disturbances. Dhar emphasized the goal remains to ensure nobody gets harmed while promoting the growth of local tourism.
