Shillong: Guwahati will soon pull its messy overhead cables underground. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma approved a 177 crore project on Saturday to clean up the city skyline. Workers will bury electrical and communication lines along 18 kilometers of five major corridors.
The city currently suffers from sagging wires that crisscross busy roads and clutter urban views. This massive utility overhaul aims to replace tangled networks with modern infrastructure. Sarma believes the city deserves better views. "Your sky pictures deserve the most aesthetic views," he posted on X to explain the project goals.
Urban expansion in the Northeast's largest hub created massive pressure on existing public utilities. The government intends to organize the streetscape while modernizing basic infrastructure to handle growing commercial activity. Officials promise the cleanup will be permanent. "Saggy, entangled wires will soon be a part of history," Sarma stated.
