Assam Seeks Power Grid Overhaul and Urban Upgrades in Delhi

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met with Union Power and Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Wednesday, August 26, in New Delhi. The pair sat down at Khattar’s official residence to hash out the state’s energy future and urban development plans.

Sarma pushed to modernize Guwahati by installing underground electrical cabling. He argued this move improves safety and keeps the power grid reliable. They also looked at ways to better tap into the state’s allocated share of electricity from central generating stations to secure long-term needs. Gas-based power plants took center stage as well. The leaders weighed the availability and pricing of natural gas to drive generation across Assam.

Sarma shared his vision for the state on X. He stated that Assam was making an “ambitious effort to achieve energy self-sufficiency while advancing pro-consumer reforms.”

The two officials also reviewed a proposal under the Urban Challenge Fund. The state wants to build integrated urban spaces that house better healthcare and sports facilities. These plans emphasize infrastructure that can withstand climate-related risks. Khattar promised the Centre’s support. He noted that the government remains committed to strengthening the state under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
