Second Saraighat Bridge Set to Boost Guwahati Connectivity

Guwahati: Assam is building a new, double-decker bridge over the Brahmaputra. The Second Saraighat Rail-cum-Road Bridge will link Guwahati’s northern and southern banks. It spans 1.3 km. The project is part of a 7.20-km railway-doubling initiative between Agthori and Kamakhya stations, sanctioned by the Ministry of Railways in 2024.

Larsen and Toubro will build the structure. It features two railway lines on the lower deck. The upper deck holds a three-lane road and a footpath. Piling starts in October 2026. This follows the monsoon season. The main spans measure 125 metres each and rest on well foundations. The work includes 600 metres of approach viaducts on the Agthori side and 200 metres on the Kamakhya side.

Urban construction presents real hurdles. Crews must manage land acquisition, remove encroachments, and shift utility lines. Northeast Frontier Railway stated, "Coordination with state agencies is continuing to make additional work fronts available." Geotechnical tests are finished. Design work is also moving forward.

The bridge integrates with road approaches from the National Highways Authority of India. It connects to Jalukbari and the Agthori road network. Digital tools will monitor construction and structural safety. Once finished, this corridor will speed up passenger and freight movement across the river.
