International flights currently reach Singapore and Paro. A new Thai AirAsia route to Bangkok Don Mueang starts in November 2026. The facility aims to serve as a bridge between the Indian mainland and Southeast Asia. Officials want more tourists, students, and investors to enter the region directly.
The terminal design honors regional traditions. Architects used over 140 metric tonnes of bamboo, incorporating Kopou flower and japi motifs into the structure. This work earned the International Architecture Award 2025. It is a striking sight. The airport blends modern tech with local spirit.
The facility features DigiYatra processing, automated baggage handling, and fast-track immigration. Teams ran extensive trials on emergency procedures and aircraft turnaround before opening. One observer noted, "The terminal attempts something that many modern airports struggle to achieve: it gives a sense of place." Workers, planners, and craftsmen built more than just a transit point.
