UK Diplomat Andrew Fleming Visits Assam to Boost Infrastructure Ties

Guwahati: Dr. Andrew Fleming, the UK Deputy High Commissioner to East and Northeast India, arrived in Assam this week for his 10th visit to the state. He labeled the trip an anniversary visit as several major British infrastructure firms are currently scouting for business opportunities in the region. He spent time touring the newly opened terminal at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport.

Fleming liked the airport. He took to social media to highlight the aesthetics of the building, which features distinct local architecture. "Singapore vibes with an Assamese touch," he wrote. The facility uses bamboo and natural greenery to reflect local culture.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma greeted the diplomat online. He noted that the visit could open a new chapter in closer UK-Assam ties. Sarma told the envoy that the plants decorating the terminal are all natural, acting as a direct complement to the bamboo architecture. The Chief Minister attributed the growing bilateral relationship to the broader partnership between India and the UK led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Assam officials are actively pushing to draw more foreign investment and business partnerships into the state.
