Guwahati: Nagaon MP Devasish Sharma hit the remote char areas of Lahorighat this week to tackle the region's deep-seated isolation. He skipped the comforts of the office and jumped onto a motorized boat to reach the hard-to-access riverine zones. He visited the chars of Garimari, Tengaguri, and Chitalmari. He even climbed onto a tractor to navigate the muddy terrain and meet locals on their own turf.
Healthcare remains the biggest hurdle for these residents. Sharma pledged to station a boat ambulance in the area within the next 30 days. This will provide a lifeline for pregnant women needing transport to medical centers. He told the locals he is focused on fixing land disputes and curbing the grip of local strongmen known as matabbars. He wants them gone.
The MP spent his time off-script, playing traditional games with local kids. He also joined a crowd to sing the Assamese anthem Manuhe Manuhor Babe. Beyond the optics, he pressed parents to get their children into school. He framed the visit as an attempt to fix the gaps in transportation and education. As the MP noted during his tour, he intends to address the long-standing problems faced by residents of these remote riverine areas.
