Assam Lawmakers Pass Bill to Build Satellite Cities Around Guwahati

Guwahati: Assam legislators passed the Guwahati Satellite City Development Authority Bill on July 28. This move targets the region's massive population spike. Guwahati is bursting at the seams. Officials hope the new Guwahati Satellite Cities Development Authority (GSCDA) will fix the pressure on local healthcare, infrastructure, and urban governance.

Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Kaushik Rai piloted the bill. He argued that current development efforts are too messy. Multiple agencies currently juggle city planning, leading to constant delays and clashing decisions. "The state also needs to create new economic growth centres capable of attracting investments, generating employment and supporting long-term urban expansion," Rai told the House.

The GSCDA will take over as a single, specialized institution to manage growth. Its mission includes identifying new corridors for urban expansion and pulling together contiguous land for projects. The authority must integrate transport, housing, and economic needs with existing facilities. By consolidating power, the state wants to move faster. The agency will also hunt for private investment to fuel these new townships.
