Kohima: The Street Vendors Association Nagaland (SVAN) is cracking down on hawkers doing business during Sunday worship hours in Dimapur. The group launched an internal survey at 4:30 am on Sunday to monitor activity. They spotted vendors arriving from Assam to set up shop early. SVAN reported that "numerous hawkers and vendors were arriving from neighbouring Assam and starting business activities."
The crackdown spans several key commercial zones. The association identified Durga Mandir, Netaji Colony, Marwaripati, New Market, Supermarket, Railway Bazaar, Hazipark, and the Blue Hill Station area as hotspots for the violations. SVAN argues that Nagaland is a Christian state where religious observances require respect.
Vendors ignoring these rules face significant fines and enforcement action. SVAN plans to coordinate these efforts with local authorities. This could include the confiscation of goods for repeat offenders. Essential food vendors have a narrow exception. They may sell perishable items after 12 noon if they follow local council guidelines. All other stalls must remain dark until worship hours end.
The association is calling for support from the public and local councils. They want to maintain the socio-religious decorum of the community. Street vendors and hawkers must comply with the directives to avoid penalties.
