Street Vendors Association Demands Immediate Action on Nagaland Vending Committees

Kohima: The Street Vendors Association of Nagaland (SVAN) is backing the Confederation of Nagaland Chamber of Commerce and Industry in its push for functional Town Vending Committees. Vendors need relief. For years, these workers have dealt with illegal extortion, corruption, unauthorized taxation, and forced evictions.

SVAN formed in 2020 to fight back against this exploitation. Since then, the group has sent formal appeals to the Department of Urban Development and municipal authorities. They want legally backed committees in every district. These bodies serve as the only statutory mechanism to shield micro-entrepreneurs from ongoing abuse.

The Street Vendors Act of 2014 mandates that vendor associations have a seat at the table. Once active, these committees will allow registered representatives to work with police, town planners, and municipal officials. SVAN noted that "the immediate constitution and activation of legitimate and fully functional TVCs across all districts was the only concrete statutory mechanism to protect micro-entrepreneurs and bring street vendors under a common legal framework."

These committees act as a hub for state and central welfare schemes. SVAN is calling on the Chief Secretary, the Department of Urban Development, and all municipal councils to stop the foot-dragging. Official identity cards and legal permits will create a transparent environment for everyone involved.
