Kohima: Nagaland Zoological Park opened its new clouded leopard enclosure on November 4. The project aims to boost wildlife conservation efforts and drive public awareness across the state. Dimapur officials hope the space educates visitors on these rare, elusive wild cats.
Vedpal Singh, the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Head of Forest Force for the state, led the inauguration ceremony. Several experts attended the event, including Director of the Small Wild Cat Conservation Foundation Dr. Jim Sanderson and Eastern Himalayas Marbled Cat Project founder Dr. Giridhar Malla. Nagaland Zoological Park Director Enyiwekha Wezah and Dimapur Division Wildlife Warden Dr. C. Zupeni Tsanglai also participated in the launch.
The zoo staff named the resident clouded leopards during the ceremony. This move helps visitors identify the cats and connect with the species. Wezah urged the public to see the animals firsthand: "I invite the public to visit Nagaland Zoological Park and see the clouded leopards."
Eastern Himalayan clouded leopards face mounting threats in the wild. Zoo managers believe this habitat helps the public appreciate these shy predators. The facility remains a center for local conservation and education.
