Shillong: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council launched its platinum jubilee Friday in Shillong. The year-long event commemorates 75 years since the council's founding. It runs until 2027 under the theme, "Remember the roots to secure the future."
Events kicked off with floral tributes at the statue of Rev. JJM Nichols Roy. A drum ensemble, prayer service, and cultural shows followed. KHADC Chairman Strong Pillar Kharjana credited Rev. Nichols Roy for securing constitutional safeguards via the Sixth Schedule. Since its June 18, 1952, inception, the council has enacted 15 Acts and 14 sets of rules to protect indigenous land and rights.
Opposition Leader Titosstarwell Chyne urged the implementation of the 125th Constitutional Amendment to bolster autonomy. He warned that indigenous people are falling behind in trade and commerce. Chyne pushed for the Members of District Council to look past party lines to save the community's economic interests.
KHADC CEM Winston Tony Lyngdoh touted the milestone as a chance to honor the sacrifices of past leaders. He stated, "Despite political changes and various challenges over seven decades, the KHADC’s fundamental responsibility to protect Khasi traditions and identity remains unchanged."
The Platinum Jubilee Celebration Steering Committee is running the show. Organizers also used the gathering to honor former secretaries, staff, and traditional herbal practitioners.
