Hima Jirang Demands Halt to Assam Bridge Project

Shillong: Hima Jirang leaders want work stopped on a bridge in Umshru village. The Assam Public Works Department started building despite the site sitting inside traditional Hima Jirang territory. Acting Syiem Pa’iem RJ Wahlang led an inspection team to the site on Friday after filing an encroachment complaint with the Ri-Bhoi Deputy Commissioner. The area remains under dispute.

A joint inspection involving officials from both Ri-Bhoi and Assam already occurred. Hima Jirang general secretary Sranly Wahlang argues that Assam needs to halt construction until the two state governments reach a formal agreement. He insists Assam stop acting unilaterally by installing foundation stones in contested zones. "The site remains disputed and called for the suspension of work until the matter is resolved through discussions between the governments of Meghalaya and Assam," Wahlang stated. The inspection group also included Syiem Khynnah Pa’iem S. Wahlang and various Hima leadership members.
