Shillong: UDP leader Paul Lyngdoh issued a stern warning on October 16 regarding the rise of social media provocations between Meghalaya and Assam. He argued that online hostility threatens to undermine the relationship between the two neighboring states. He described the current trend as a digital intox phenomenon. Individuals are posting inflammatory content to grab headlines and stir up trouble.
The internet is fueling unnecessary animosity. People from both states are filming and sharing videos of alleged misconduct by visitors at the border. These clips show public urination, spitting, and suspected drink-driving incidents. Such content triggers sharp online exchanges that amplify minor disputes into broader conflicts. Lyngdoh insists these isolated acts do not reflect the reality of interstate ties.
Lyngdoh called for collective action from stakeholders to choose cooperation over confrontation. He highlighted positive bilateral efforts, such as reciprocal arrangements for vehicle accommodation at airports, as evidence of progress. He believes both states benefit more when they build trust rather than fighting online. Lyngdoh stated, "It can be addressed only through collective efforts by stakeholders from both states to choose cooperation over confrontation." Officials must now focus on mutual understanding to stop these digital spats from dictating state policy.
