Shillong: Meghalaya is ready to restart border negotiations with Assam. Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar confirmed the state has finished its homework but remains stalled. Assam must still appoint a chairman for its regional committee. The process waits on this specific personnel move.
Dhar told reporters, "We are waiting for Assam to officially inform us who the chairman from their side will be. As soon as they appoint the chairman of the regional committee, I think we will meet." Meghalaya officials have nearly finalized the necessary survey work for the second phase of talks.
The two states aim to resolve six remaining areas of difference. This effort builds on a 2022 agreement that settled disputes in the first six sectors. Committees in both states now hold the authority to finalize the border. Regarding the Jaintia Hills, officials have placed a request for a formal resurvey before the committee.
Dhar noted that relevant data for Khasi-Pnar villages sits with the district administration. The government plans to review internal reports before meeting with Assam counterparts. Disputed sectors remain under active discussion. The committees will determine the final path forward once all preliminary reports reach the table.
