Shillong: Deputy Commissioners from North Garo Hills and Assam’s Goalpara district descended on Dilma Adap village Tuesday. They arrived to stop the fighting. A recent confrontation between residents of the two states had left the border community on edge. The visit aimed to restore normalcy.
Kharkutta MLA Rupert Momin confirmed the area is quiet again. Civil administration and police from both sides intervened to stop the chaos. The trouble started last week when a group of youths from Assam allegedly pushed into the village and triggered a disturbance. Arguments quickly turned into a physical fight involving local residents from both sides.
Dilma Adap sits in the Adokgre block. It remains a disputed stretch of the Meghalaya-Assam border. While it does not appear on the official list of six priority areas for current government settlement, it houses a mix of residents. Most inhabitants participate in Meghalaya’s government and electoral systems, but some still take benefits from Assam.
Momin said the joint visit successfully calmed the immediate fire. Still, the underlying dispute remains. The MLA noted, "a permanent resolution requires political intervention from both state governments."
