Guwahati: Boko police detained three men on Wednesday, September 9, after they tried to build a school on land Assam claims as its own. The site sits at Noapara, roughly 6 to 7 kilometers from the Assam-Meghalaya state line. Authorities identified the detainees as Dibanstar Rynjah, 25, Joseph Nongmin, 26, and Synsharlang Nongspong, 30.
Construction sparked immediate local unrest. Boko-Chaygaon Co-District Commissioner Priyanshu Bhardwaj and Revenue Circle Officer Krishna Arjun Barman arrived to shut the project down. A police squad led by Co-District Superintendent of Police Jankishore Gogoi also swept the area to stabilize the scene.
Tensions flared across the line shortly after. Meghalaya police grabbed Nenggram Sangma, a staffer for the Assam Power Department, in a retaliatory move. Police forces in both states released all detainees by Wednesday evening. The episode reflects deep-seated friction between the states, where territorial claims periodically boil over. As officials noted, the "incident comes against the backdrop of longstanding boundary-related sensitivities between Assam and Meghalaya."
