Guwahati: Arsonists may have torched a Maruti Alto outside the Lampi Border Outpost on Tuesday night. The vehicle belonged to Havildar Arbinda Roy of the 28th Battalion. It sat outside the camp because the approach road is too damaged for vehicle access. The car burned completely.
Police filed an FIR at the Lampi Border Police Outpost. They are currently weighing accident against sabotage. A forensic team from Guwahati is on the scene to gather evidence. Senior official Jan Kishore Gogoi plans to visit the site to review the security situation.
Tensions remain high along the Assam-Meghalaya border. Recent unrest in Shillong and Jorabat keeps the region on edge. Meghalaya Police recently arrested three Khasi Students Union leaders following a chaotic rally on August 19. Arjun Chettri, an executive member of the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council, condemned the blaze as a grave criminal act. He claims the Khasi community has pressured the region since 2010.
Chettri called for the central government to ban the KSU. He views the burning as a direct challenge to state authority. Regarding the danger posed to locals and officers, Chettri stated, "If an Assam Police vehicle can be targeted, then the safety of ordinary residents of Lampi also becomes a serious concern."
Officials have not identified any suspects yet. They are digging through the details to find the truth. Chettri insists on a firm response. He warned, "Otherwise, they will become emboldened and continue to create trouble."
