Police nab three Assam men in Meghalaya motorcycle theft sting

Shillong: Meghalaya police arrested three men from Assam after catching them with three suspicious motorcycles in the East Khasi Hills district. Mawsynram police set an ambush in the Weilai area at 2:10 pm on August 27 after receiving a tip. Four men tried to bolt into the woods, but local villagers helped officers grab three of them. One suspect slipped away and evaded a follow-up search.

Officers seized a Yamaha R15 with plates AS-01-FV-4193, a Royal Enfield Hunter 350 tagged AS-25-Z-1346, and another Yamaha R15 registered as AS-27-F-1263. None of the bikes had ignition keys. The wiring on every bike was hotwired. This mess pointed to theft. Police said, "an investigation is underway to establish the ownership and origin of the motorcycles and identify other people who may be linked to the suspected vehicle theft network."

The detainees are 25-year-old Nipu Das, 22-year-old Karan Sundi, and 26-year-old Babu Basumatary. All three live in Tampur, Assam. Authorities hauled the men and the bikes to Mawsynram Police Station to begin formal legal processing.
