Guwahati: Tension boiled over at the Noapara Lower Primary School on September 5. Meghalaya supporters halted census operations in the Lampi area of Kamrup district. Village headman Chankiyo Marak and Arthuch Sangma led the charge. They arrived at the school alongside Meghalaya Police to protest the population count.
The standoff triggered an immediate response. Assam Police officers arrived on the scene to calm the situation. They escorted the census officials away only after the workers finished their assigned tasks. This friction highlights a deep, long-standing territorial feud between the two states.
Arjun Chhetri, an executive member of the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council, blamed the government for the mess. He cited poor security and administrative failure for the recurring threats. He took a sharp jab at Meghalaya's territorial ambitions. "If a Garo-Khasi village existed in Dispur, Meghalaya could potentially go on to claim Assam's capital as part of its territory," Chhetri said. He demanded tougher security to keep state workers safe during future government exercises.
