Shillong: The KHNAM party is demanding the Election department exercise caution during the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Meghalaya’s border zones. Working president Thomas Passah warned that residents in Langpih, Block-I, and Block-II face aggressive enrollment tactics from Assam officials. The party fears Meghalaya is losing its grip on border populations while Assam pushes to capture them on its own voter lists.
Passah expressed frustration regarding the current state of affairs. He noted that the government appears passive while the neighboring state remains aggressive. "But the sharp part is that Meghalaya is not trying to enrol them in the SIR of Meghalaya, while Assam is trying to enrol them in the SIR of Assam," he said. He maintains that citizens who belong to Meghalaya must be protected within the state's own revision process.
The risk of dual documentation complicates the situation. Passah highlighted that some residents currently hold dual Election Photo Identity Cards, which creates potential for administrative chaos. He clarified that while ethnicity should not be the sole factor determining voting rights, the current process must ensure Khasi residents are registered specifically in Meghalaya. He urged the Chief Electoral Officer to take a proactive stance to prevent these individuals from being absorbed into Assam’s political system.
