Guwahati: Tension boiled over Saturday at the Assam-Meghalaya border. More than 100 people from Assam swarmed Maikhuli Field. They tore down a partly cemented wall behind the Maikhuli Upper Primary School before locking the main entrance gate. The crowd shut out local villagers. Mintu Boro of Bakrapara allegedly led the group.
Villagers fought back. They broke the locks and forced the gate open. A scuffle broke out between the two factions. Police arrived fast. Officers from the Pillangkata and Basistha Mandir outposts pushed the Assam residents back across the line. Ri-Bhoi Superintendent of Police Giri Prasad confirmed the intervention.
Officials rushed to the scene to stop more violence. The group included Additional Superintendents of Police from both states, DySP M. Marngat from Nongpoh, and the heads of the Khanapara and Basistha police stations. CRPF troops and local police now guard the boundary. Officials placed forces on both sides as a precaution.
The authorities cooled the heat. Giri Prasad said, "The situation was brought under control after police and senior officials from Assam and Meghalaya intervened." Patrols continue across the area. Police report the border remains peaceful with no further confrontations reported.
