Shillong: Meghalaya Trinamool Congress president Charles Pyngrope is demanding a formal probe into claims that Assam officials are bullying Langpih villagers. Residents allege that agents from the neighboring state are forcing them to sign up for Assam’s Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The border area remains a powder keg. Villagers say they sought help from the state government after previous complaints went ignored.
Locals met with Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong to air their grievances. Pyngrope told reporters that officials must act now. "It is a major concern, but since it has been brought to the government’s notice, I think the Deputy Commissioner of the district should verify these facts and speak to the (Assam) counterpart to ensure that these things do not happen," Pyngrope said.
The TMC leader insists that the Deputy Commissioner must open a dialogue with his Assam counterpart to cool the situation. These border villages face constant administrative tension. Pyngrope warned that direct communication between district authorities is the only way to stop the dispute from spiraling out of control.
