Shillong: Villagers in the Langpih sector slammed reports suggesting they want to join Assam. They claim the figures are wrong. Hundreds of residents gathered at Umthli on Wednesday to set the record straight. The FKJGP Rimuliang Circle threw its weight behind the locals, standing firm on their desire to stay with Meghalaya.
FKJGP Rimuliang president Serbilin Lyngdoh said the meeting brought together folks from Umthli, Mawdiangkob, Talimara, Umdiangsiar, Umdiangphiang, Umkhamdol, Dariphang, Umbah, Ukiam, Borkhuli, Hasem, Warigro, and Doledonga. Theodas Marak, chairman of the Association of Village Headmen, chaired the session.
Locals dismissed an Assam-based news report claiming 95 per cent of residents prefer to join Assam. Instead, they flipped the script. The residents argued that an overwhelming majority wants to stay in Meghalaya. Lyngdoh warned that people should not buy into efforts that distort their actual position. He said, "The two governments should take into account the views of the people living in the disputed areas while pursuing the boundary settlement process."
Leaders from the 13 villages want their stance on the record. They expect both states to respect their wishes during border talks. The goal remains clear: an early resolution that keeps their homes under Meghalaya.
