FKJGP Pressures Meghalaya Government for Border and Infrastructure Upgrades

Shillong: The Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) wants faster progress on the Meghalaya-Assam border dispute. General secretary Willis Syiem handed a memorandum to Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on October 17. The group claims Assam officials recently stopped construction of a government-sanctioned ICDS centre. They demanded more personnel and better facilities at the Langpih and Mallangkona border outposts.

Healthcare in West Khasi Hills needs a major overhaul. Syiem told the government: "The district urgently needed specialist doctors, a cancer wing, a dialysis centre, more ambulances and adequate medical staff." The FKJGP wants to upgrade Maweit and Rambrai primary health centres to community health centres. They also want Mawlangkhar and Umdang sub-centres boosted to primary health centres and a fully functional Maternal and Child Health facility.

The group outlined a long list of infrastructure needs. They are pushing for science and commerce colleges, plus the opening of the polytechnic at Mawrusyiar and the Industrial Training Institute. Road projects demand attention, specifically the Nongstoin-Rambrai-Chaigoan route, the Mawthungkper-Jaidoh-Mawkaton widening, and the Riangdo-Shallang-Maweit connection.

Tourism development remains a priority for locations like Nongkhnum Island, Mawphanlur, Langshiang, and Weispi waterfalls. The organization expects better amenities and support for local business owners. Finally, the FKJGP requested an artificial-turf football pitch at Nongstoin, a synthetic track at Nongpathar, and a promotion for the Urban Affairs office in Nongstoin to district status with a dedicated Executive Engineer.
