Garo Hills Group Demands NH-62 Repairs Amid Night Blockade

Shillong: Activists blocked the roads. The Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People started an indefinite night blockade across South Garo Hills on October 28. The protest runs daily from 7 pm to 5 am. Residents face daily hazards on the dilapidated highway connecting Dalu to Baghmara, formerly known as NH-217.

The group demands the government fix the road immediately. Previous attempts to spur action through rallies and written pleas failed. FKJGP Garo Hills Zone President Pritam Arengh condemned the silence from the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited and the state PWD. He noted, "The highway serving as a vital lifeline for South Garo Hills" remains in ruins while authorities ignore the fallout.

The broken road cripples trade and blocks transport for medical patients. The federation wants the Meghalaya government, the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, NHIDCL, and the state PWD to finish the Detailed Project Report, environmental clearances, and tendering now. They also want Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma to step in, arguing that road access determines the safety and economic survival of this remote border district.
