Thousands gather in Shillong to honor late Fr John Madur

Shillong: Thousands of mourners packed the Cathedral Parish in Shillong on Thursday to bury Rev. Fr John Madur. The former Diocesan Administrator died at 67. He passed away at Nazareth Hospital at 2:50 pm this past Tuesday.

Archbishop of Shillong Rev. Victor Lyngdoh led the service. Bishop of Nongstoin Rev. Wilbert Marwein and Bishop of Jowai Rev. Ferdinand Dkhar also attended the mass. Clergy and religious sisters filled the pews to honor his life. Following the rites, the Church laid him to rest at the Laitumkhrah Catholic Church cemetery in Nongrimmaw.

Born on December 10, 1958, Madur spent nearly 40 years serving the Church. He entered the priesthood on December 20, 1987. After Archbishop Dominic Jala died in October 2019, Madur stepped up as Diocesan Administrator. He held that top post until 2021. He also served as the Chancellor and Vicar General for the Archdiocese of Shillong. A notice from the Archdiocese confirmed his passing, stating he "served the Church for nearly four decades."
