Shillong: Pollution is eating away at the electrical grid in Byrnihat. Power Minister Metbah Lyngdoh confirmed on Thursday that grit and grime from the region are destroying poles, wires, and essential gear. The district requires major upgrades to handle this decay and surging demand.
The state government is closing in on a deal to secure an externally aided project. This cash will bankroll new substations and reinforce the power network across Ri-Bhoi. Pressure groups and local village leaders keep flagging the same issues: aging equipment and constant, frustrating blackouts.
Construction at the 132/33 KV substation in Umlyngkdait is behind schedule. Lyngdoh inspected the site six or seven months ago but rocky terrain slowed the crews down. He has since forced multiple review meetings to push the work along. Lyngdoh told reporters, "The state government is in the final stages of securing an externally aided project to upgrade substations and strengthen the local power network."
Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited plans to flip the switch on the Umlyngkdait facility this December. The minister expects this move to finally stabilize the power supply in Nongpoh. He believes these fixes will stop the outages and satisfy the needs of local consumers.
