Shillong: Meghalaya slashed its aggregate technical and commercial power losses from 25.95 percent in 2022 to 10.76 percent in 2025. Power Minister Metbah Lyngdoh confirmed the figures during the autumn session of the Legislative Assembly on August 25. The state hit these marks while pushing the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme forward.
Technical losses dropped from 21.76 percent to 16.60 percent over the same period. The financial health of the distribution utility also shifted from a six paise gap to a minus 30 paise gap. The state remains focused on its goal of cutting AT&C losses to 18 percent. This work covers all 12 districts.
Officials now plan to electrify 55,628 additional households. This initiative targets about 2,500 villages and habitations. The government sanctioned Rs 429.26 crore for this project and survey work has already started. Still, gaps persist. Four villages in East Khasi Hills remain without power: Dobkba, Lyngkhong, Lailad, and Rngibah.
Smart meters are coming next. The rollout includes 3,35,138 single-phase smart meters, 50,000 single-phase units with net metering, 70,862 three-phase smart meters, and 4,000 three-phase units with net metering. The plan also covers 11,419 distribution transformers, 420 boundary meters, and 904 feeder meters. Regarding these upgrades, the government stated, "The ongoing power-sector works are aimed at improving reliability, reducing distribution losses and making billing and energy monitoring more efficient through smart metering and other network upgrades."
