Shillong: Meghalaya is mapping out eight new five-star hotel projects. Tourism Minister Timothy D Shira confirmed the plan to MLA Rupert Momin on August 26 during the Autumn Session of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. The state currently hosts only two five-star hotels. Both sit inside Shillong.
Officials intend to spread luxury lodging across the state. Proposed locations include Umiam, Sohra, Tura, and New Shillong. These sites were chosen based on water and power access, road connectivity, existing tourist traffic, and population density. The Tourism Department is currently handling project reports and the tendering process. Detailed revenue figures for the 2022-23, 2023-24, and 2024-25 fiscal years remain unavailable. "The information was still being collected," the department noted.
Growth is happening fast. Meghalaya had zero five-star hotels in 2020. The state now operates two, and more premium projects are in the works as the government pushes to build out infrastructure outside the state capital.
