Shillong: Opposition leader Dr. Mukul Sangma warned that staffing shortages are crippling the Meghalaya Police. The force must act fast to fill empty posts. He spoke to reporters on Wednesday following a State Security Commission meeting. Sangma argues that existing vacancies threaten the department's ability to manage rising militancy, civil unrest, and Shillong’s massive traffic jams.
The state must evaluate its security needs constantly. Sangma specifically highlighted the SF-10 unit, a group of rangers trained to suppress mob violence. He wants a review of how these specialists are deployed and if they stay ready for combat. Untrained staff cannot manage Shillong’s roads. He said, "Traffic management is not everybody’s cup of tea," adding that officers assigned to these duties need specialized training to handle the pressure of an urban environment.
Sangma demanded that the government keep politics out of police operations. He called for strict adherence to the Meghalaya Police Act of 2010 to protect the department from interference regarding transfers and postings. Recruitment must match the actual needs on the ground. Only then can the force maintain its institutional independence and suppress real-world security threats.
