Mukul Sangma Rejects BJP Move and Affirms TMC Loyalty

Shillong: Mukul M. Sangma slammed the door on rumors about a potential jump to the BJP. The senior Meghalaya TMC leader stated he remains firmly with the party led by Mamata Banerjee. He confirmed his loyalty during a Thursday press event in Shillong. The Leader of Opposition is staying put. "Mukul Sangma is not joining BJP or any other political party. No national party," he said.

Sangma dismissed the BJP's recent growth in the 60-member Assembly. The party ballooned from two seats to ten after absorbing eight former UDP MLAs. Sangma questioned the strength of this political shift. He argued that voters do not always follow the lead of switching politicians. The public decides outcomes, not political maneuvers or backroom deals. He warned that internal frustrations within the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance are driving these changes.

He described the current ruling coalition as lacking cohesiveness. Sangma claimed that NPP members have already voiced concerns about governance mispriorities. He contrasted his current opposition role with his tenure as Chief Minister. He noted that he previously engaged with opposition legislators on constituency matters without bias. He views integrity as the bedrock of public service.

Sangma labeled the rival TMC faction a result of political poaching. He told Mamata Banerjee that "integrity in public life is the strongest weapon." He warned that leaders who compromise their values become vulnerable to external pressure. The real test arrives at the ballot box. He remains convinced that counting MLAs is a poor metric for assessing actual grassroots support.
