Shillong: Opposition leader Mukul M. Sangma sounded the alarm on Wednesday regarding illegal immigration, uncontrolled influx, and ongoing border disputes. He spoke following a State Security Commission meeting in Shillong. The session covered police readiness, vacant posts, and reports that former militants are trying to regroup.
Sangma insisted that existing laws need teeth. He specifically pointed to the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act of 2016. He said, "The existing legal framework needed to be implemented effectively." Officials must ensure the law works as intended to protect residents.
Border trouble persists. Sangma called for better coordination between Assam and Meghalaya authorities. Political leaders cannot handle this alone. He wants active engagement from the top down to the block level. Proactive communication between the states is the only way to avoid the fallout of recurring border conflicts.
The India-Bangladesh border poses a different, grinding problem. Fencing has cut off landowners from property sitting between the zero line and the barrier. These citizens cannot use their land even though they legally own it. Sangma urged the Centre to step in with compensation for these families, who remain effectively locked out of their own fields.
