Opposition Leader Targets Police Corruption and Legal Hiring Practices in Meghalaya

Shillong: Opposition leader Dr. Mukul Sangma will take on the alleged ties between police and politicians at the next State Security Commission meeting. He is acting after the Khasi Students’ Union exposed officers extorting cash from truckers on the Shillong Bypass. Sangma wants the government to use Sections 107 and 108 of the Meghalaya Police Act, 2010. He argues these rules stop political interference and fix misconduct.

He wants a full inquiry into whether outside actors fueled the extortion racket. The police force faces a credibility crisis. Sangma reminded the government that an executive order from 2010 to remove illegal check gates remains in effect. “That order still stands and it has to be enforced,” he said. He also criticized the government for what he called whimsical transfers of police staff.

The veteran politician also slammed the state for hiring lawyers from outside Meghalaya. He views this as a loss of opportunity for local graduates. He argued that public funds should support the local legal community rather than paying outsiders. The dispute coincides with ongoing tensions between the legal fraternity and the Advocate General. Sangma insists that the state must build a professional system that allows local talent to grow. He believes the government must listen to these collective concerns to ensure the professional future of the state's youth.
