Shillong: The Khasi Students’ Union is pushing for the resignation of East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem. They want an independent probe into police allegedly shaking down truckers. The union plastered banners at the SP’s office, the Secretariat, Khyndai Lad, and Motphran. They claim police are busy wiping away evidence of their crimes.
The union accuses the department of destroying a structure at the Mawkhanu and Thangshalai sites to hide their tracks. One banner challenged the SP directly. It read, “Prove that you have nothing to do with it and that you are clean. Step down as SP and allow an independent investigation.” The KSU also wants the immediate arrest and punishment of any officers caught in the scheme.
Pressure is mounting as videos of the alleged shakedowns circulate. The East Khasi Hills Police suspended several officers pending a preliminary inquiry. The union pointedly asked on one banner, “Where’s my share?”
Voice of the People Party president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit is also on the warpath. He wants to know why the government tore down the checkpoints while investigators are still working. He challenged Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong to explain the move. Basaiawmoit warned that trashing the sites before findings are in might taint the entire investigation. He added that the latest mess proves these spots were clearly under state police control all along.
