Shillong: VPP Mawryngkneng MLA Heaving Stone Kharpran took police to task on Wednesday over persistent complaints surrounding the Diengpasoh checkpoint. He demanded answers. Kharpran met with the newly posted Officer-in-Charge, Binode A Bamon, to grill him on the legal authority behind the stop-and-search operations targeting passing trucks.
The MLA pressed for details on whether officers were illegally collecting cash from drivers or failing to issue official receipts and challans. He also pushed for proof that police maintained proper duty and vehicle-checking logs. Local leaders from the Dorbar Shnong Diengpasoh joined the inspection, noting that authorities never consulted them before building the temporary shelter on their land.
Kharpran made his stance clear to the officers on site. "Vehicle checking could not become a licence for arbitrary action," he stated. He warned the police that operations must stay transparent and strictly lawful. Instead of shaking down truckers, the MLA ordered the force to target genuine highway threats like speeding, overloaded vehicles, and the illegal transport of prohibited substances.
The legislator vowed to keep a close watch on highway safety and personnel conduct in the area. He expects an end to the complaints immediately.
