Shillong: Police grilled KSU Shangpung Circle member Eladwanmi Papang on Monday. They focused on his scooter, which appeared during a Khasi Students’ Union bike rally in Shillong on August 19. Papang works as a taxi driver and handles school runs.
Officers nabbed Papang near BK Bajoria School at Demseiniong around 1 pm. They took him to Jowai to recover his vehicle, which authorities had seized earlier from Phramer in West Jaintia Hills. Police then dragged him to Civil Hospital for a checkup around midnight before moving him to Sadar Police Station. He finally walked free after 1 am.
Investigators wanted to know who rode his scooter during the protest. Papang insisted he stayed away from the demonstration to focus on his driving job. “I am a KSU member, but I did not participate in the rally because I was working. I had to pick up schoolchildren and did not have time to attend the rally,” he said.
He told police his brother borrowed the bike that day with another individual. Papang remains unsure if his brother is in custody, as he could not reach him. He must return to Sadar Police Station on Tuesday for more questioning. His scooter stays with the police for now.
