Shillong: Meghalaya Police have launched a nationwide manhunt for a college student accused of raping a minor and sexually exploiting several women. The suspect vanished after accusations erupted on social media around July 6. The case triggered intense public anger. Police have now formed a special investigation team to track him down.

East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem confirmed that an initial lookout notice for Mizoram was expanded to every state in the country. Investigators dismissed rumors that the suspect fled to Aizawl. Police coordinated with local authorities there, who searched the man's home but came up empty-handed.

A formal FIR is on file at Laitumkhrah Police Station. Detectives have already recorded the statement of the primary complainant. While police have spoken to other potential victims by phone, no further formal reports have been filed. Syiem urged these women to step forward to ensure legal action can proceed.

Regarding online rumors of eight victims, the police remain cautious. Syiem noted, "The social media claim that there are eight victims is not a fact at this stage." He added that investigators cannot confirm the total number of survivors until they formally provide statements.

The Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress has demanded a fast, impartial probe. President Joplyn Shylla labeled the allegations a grave violation of women's safety and rights. She urged officials to handle the case with urgency. Police promised to file a charge sheet immediately after making an arrest and gathering sufficient evidence.
