Masked attackers target Shillong pollution office with petrol bombs

Shillong: Two masked men on a scooter attacked the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board office in Shillong on Monday. The pair hurled two petrol bombs between 12 noon and 12:30 pm. No one got hurt. Property damage remained minimal.

Shillong City Superintendent of Police Dangsan Khyriem confirmed the incident. Officers have now registered a case at the Laitumkhrah police station. "Two petrol bombs were hurled. A case will be registered based on the FIR," Khyriem said. Authorities are currently reviewing CCTV footage to track down the suspects.

The attack happened just days after the board held a public hearing on a limestone mining project proposed by Shree Cement. This project at Lum Syrman in East Jaintia Hills faces stiff resistance. Local residents, farmers, and civil society groups claim the mine threatens the environment and their livelihoods. Forensic teams have visited the site to gather evidence, but police say it is premature to link the bombing directly to the mining dispute.
