Shillong: Chief Justice of the High Court of Meghalaya, Justice Revati Mohite Dere, wants more people to choose mediation over long court battles. She spoke Wednesday at a 40-hour training program titled Concepts and Techniques of Mediation held at the High Court conference hall. The Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority organized the event alongside the Supreme Court’s Mediation and Conciliation Project Committee and the High Court’s Mediation Committee.
Litigation drags on. Mediation settles things. The Chief Justice believes the training will give participants the necessary skills to resolve complex disputes. She highlighted how the process works for family, workplace, and community issues. Mediation helps parties find closure in inheritance cases, matrimonial fights, and civil matters between relatives. It is flexible, private, and cheaper than standard court battles.
The Chief Justice spoke about the core of the process. "Mediation fosters dialogue, understanding, and empathy. Its true strength lies not in force, but in dialogue that heals and restores relationships." She noted that mediators must stay impartial, patient, and persistent while thinking creatively to find solutions that do not leave anyone feeling cheated.
Justice Dere called for stakeholders to spread the word about these benefits. Justices Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew, Wanlura Diengdoh, and Biswadeep Bhattacharjee attended the session. Judicial officers and various participants joined them to hear the call for more amicable dispute resolution.
