Assam Bans Polygamous Employees From State Jobs

Guwahati: Assam government workers caught in polygamous marriages will now lose their jobs. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the state cabinet finalized the decision on November 3. Officials will fire offenders and ban them from any future government work.

The state officially amended the Assam Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 1964. They inserted Clause 6 under Rule 7 to cement these consequences. The move follows months of legislative prep work. During the July 10 presentation of the 2026-27 Assam Budget, Finance Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah proposed these specific disciplinary changes to ensure accountability.

The administration previously targeted multiple marriages in October 2023. Under Rule 26 of the Assam Civil Services (Conduct) Rules, 1965, the state required employees to seek permission before entering a second marriage if their current spouse remained alive. Violations then triggered departmental proceedings or forced retirement. Sarma stated, "The government has amended the Assam Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 1964, by inserting Clause 6 under Rule 7 to provide for stricter action against employees found practising polygamy."

This policy shift targets gender justice and women's empowerment. Officials also plan to cut off welfare scheme benefits for men who practice polygamy. The state now shifts from mere administrative warnings to total termination and permanent employment blacklisting.
