Guwahati: Electricity bills in Assam will climb this November. The Assam Electricity Regulatory Commission approved the hike to cover mounting fuel and power costs. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the plan at Vajpayee Bhawan on Tuesday. The state needs to recoup Rs 156 crore in losses from April to August 2026. Higher oil prices triggered by the turmoil in West Asia forced the state to buy power at steeper rates.

Sarma addressed concerns about the spike during his press briefing. "When we recover the losses, it would be withdrawn. The way it has been projected that it would be a big hike, it's not like that. I am saying, it won't be over five paise," he stated. The Chief Minister expects the temporary levy to vanish within five months. APDCL will recover the funds through March 2027.

The hike hits different consumers in varying ways. Jeevandhara and domestic users with loads under 30 kW face a small increase of Rs 0.05 per unit. Other low-tension categories and high-tension users with loads exceeding 20 kW will pay an extra Rs 0.30 per unit. Sarma maintains the move is strictly for recovery, not a permanent tariff update.
