Shillong: The Supreme Court Bar Association wants the Meghalaya High Court Bar Association and the Shillong Bar Association to drop their joint resolution against Advocate General Amit Kumar. These local groups expelled Kumar on August 13 and demanded his removal from office. The SCBA insists the move is unwarranted.
The dispute stems from court proceedings regarding the alleged assault and public parading of a lawyer in Shillong. That lawyer had faced prior accusations of molesting a woman law intern. During the High Court hearing, judges questioned why police failed to intervene during the assault. Kumar addressed the court on these issues. He argued that while the Bar must be protected, there is an equal need to guard the safety and dignity of women advocates and law interns.
The SCBA warned that targeting a lawyer for statements made during active litigation risks escalating the situation. The national body stated, "Taking these circumstances into account, particularly when the matter is already under consideration on the judicial side," seeking action against the official remains inappropriate. They urged the associations to focus on building a confidential system for women to report grievances. The goal is to allow women to speak fearlessly while maintaining the collective safety of the profession.
