Veteran North Lakhimpur Advocate Sirajul Islam Hazarika Dies at 78

Guwahati: Sirajul Islam Hazarika died Monday night. The 78-year-old legal veteran suffered a cardiac arrest. Known as Jewel, he served the community as a dedicated social worker and the Public Prosecutor for North Lakhimpur.

Hazarika was born in 1948 to Anjub Ali Hazarika and Safatun Nisha Hazarika. He attended North Lakhimpur Govt. Higher Secondary School before graduating from North Lakhimpur College. He finished his law degree at Gauhati University. He officially joined the North Lakhimpur Bar in 1979.

He spent over 40 years in the legal field, holding several leadership roles. He also entered politics, running for the 111 Lakhimpur LAC seat during the 1985 Assam Assembly election after the Assam Accord. He leaves behind one son and one daughter.

Advocates gathered at the North Lakhimpur Law Association on Tuesday to honor his career. A large crowd attended his Janaza at the North Lakhimpur Kabarstan later that day. His passing triggered wide grief across political and social circles. Officials and neighbors gathered to pay their respects to a man described as a "prominent legal practitioner, social worker, and senior advocate."
