Family Demands Justice Five Years After Thangkhiew Killing

Shillong: Cheristerfield Thangkhiew’s family refuses to quit. Five years have passed since the midnight raid that left the former HNLC leader dead in his Mawlai Kynton Massar home. Police stormed his residence at 3 a.m. on August 13, 2021. They claimed self-defense, alleging Thangkhiew attacked officers with a knife. The killing triggered riots and burned police vehicles across Shillong.

The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission finished its investigation into the incident. The findings are in, but nobody faces charges. Thangkhiew’s younger brother slammed the government for its total inaction. He stated that the family would push forward despite the strain of the legal process. "No amount of legal fatigue or state silence will force them to withdraw their battle in the Meghalaya High Court," the family asserted.

The case sits before the High Court of Meghalaya today. Supporters marked the anniversary with a memorial service held by the KSU Mawlai Circle. Members offered prayers and laid flowers at Thangkhiew’s memorial in Lawmali. KSU Mawlai Circle president Biangbor L Paliar addressed the crowd, marking the somber occasion.
