Viral Video Sparks Shillong Bar Shutdown and Liquor Raid

Shillong: A viral video showing workers scrubbing kitchen gear in the filth of the Umkhrah River forced a hard crackdown in Shillong on Monday. Officials targeted the Saw Furlong area after the footage, recorded by a local taxi driver near the dumping site, blew up on social media.

Cozy Bar got the ax. Inspectors ordered the place shut immediately because of extreme unhygienic conditions. DBS Mukhim, the Assistant Commissioner of Food and Safety, plans to petition multiple government departments to keep the pressure on.

The operation brought together police, the Khasi Students’ Union, and officials from the Food Safety, Excise, Labour, and Urban Affairs departments. A search of a nearby house revealed a hidden room packed with illicit booze. The Excise Department seized the entire haul.

The Khasi Students’ Union claimed several non-tribal people live in the area under filthy, unsafe conditions. They pressed the Shillong Municipal Board and the Urban Affairs Department to keep a tighter grip on local businesses. Regarding the wider fallout, the union stated, "The incident has sparked serious concerns over food safety and sanitation." Multiple state regulators now have the establishment in their sights.
