Shillong: The Meghalaya High Court closed a public interest litigation regarding roadside hawker relocation in Shillong. Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice W. Diengdoh reviewed the Shillong Municipal Board affidavit. The board set a hard deadline of August 17 to finish the move.
Construction at the Dhankheti SMB Parking Lot is finished. That site holds 32 stalls. Another 151 stalls at the Barik Brightwell Bungalow compound will wrap up by August 5. Vendors with valid Certificates of Vending must move by the August 17 cutoff. The board will hand out stalls through a trade-wise draw of lots.
The SMB will manage waste at these sites. They confirmed no trees were cut during the build. The board also noted the Brightwell Bungalow is not a heritage site. The vending area is separate from the main structure. A February 20 notification already banned vending in Laitumkhrah, Dhankheti, Malki Point, Barik, Phan Nonglait Park, Red Cross, Laban, and Lumshatsngi.
The bench accepted the plan as exhaustive. They held that no further consideration was required in the petition. The court will check on progress during a hearing on August 20. The board states it will oversee the sites and "no trees were felled during construction."
