Shillong: The Khasi Students Union (KSU), Shillong Mihngi Circle, is challenging a religious structure built inside the Central Bureau of Investigation office at Mawdiangdiang. The union filed formal demands for answers with the Directorate of Urban Affairs and the Revenue and Disaster Management Department. They want to know if the construction is legal. The land belongs to the government.
KSU general secretary Samuel Kharbani stated, "the issue was not directed against any religion or religious community but centred on the rule of law, secular governance, and the proper utilisation of government land." The union wants to know if the Revenue Department granted permission for the build. They specifically asked if the land was strictly for office functions. If no permits exist, the KSU demands an immediate halt to all work.
The union also hit the Directorate of Urban Affairs with a list of pointed questions. They want to see building sanctions, development permits, or any No Objection Certificates. No such paperwork appears to exist. The union pointed to Supreme Court rulings that forbid unauthorized religious structures on public property. They argued that government offices must remain secular. Failure to provide clear answers will lead to legal action and public protests.
