Shillong: The Meghalaya government is demanding answers from the Central Bureau of Investigation. Officials want a formal explanation regarding an alleged temple build inside the federal agency's Mawdiangdiang campus. The New Shillong Township Development Agency issued the notice after receiving multiple complaints about the structure.
The land was leased to the CBI on November 14, 2018. The contract strictly limited usage to an office and residential complex. Clause 10 of that agreement forbids any new structures or site alterations without prior written permission from the agency. P. K. Boro, the Member Secretary of the NSTDA and Director of Urban Affairs, signed the demand letter addressed to the Deputy Inspector General of the CBI Anti-Corruption Branch in Shillong.
Tensions remain high. The Khasi Students’ Union originally filed the complaint, arguing that federal agencies must follow the same land laws as everyone else. The union stated, "The lease agreement as laid down may perhaps invariably be complied with," while pushing for a fast, fair inquiry into the potential breach. They insist this is not about religion, but about protecting state revenue land.
Political fallout is growing. The opposition Voice of the People Party is now publicly questioning the legality of the site work. They want to see swift action if investigators confirm a lease violation. The NSTDA is currently reviewing the matter, waiting for the CBI to provide a response before deciding on further regulatory steps.
